THANDISWA MAZWAI TO RELEASE FIRST SINGLE ‘KULUNGILE’ FROM UPCOMING ALBUM SANKOFA ON APRIL 12 and REVEALS TINY DESK CONCERT ON APRIL 1

Legendary musician Thandiswa Mazwai will release the first single from her upcoming album Sankofa on April 12 and her NPR Tiny Desk concert will drop on April 1.

Thandiswa’s new single ‘Kulungile’, featuring Nduduzo Makhathini, will be released on April 12 on all streaming platforms.

Thandiswa says: “Sankofa in the Ghanian language Twi means to go back and fetch what’s been left behind – what is important, what honours you, and what needs healing. Kulungile is about healing some of the traumas that we experience as children. Many of us have faced rejection and abandonment, sexual violence. This song is for that child within that seeks justice, comfort and healing.”

Thandiswa will be releasing her much-awaited album Sankofa in May 2024! This will be celebrated with an exciting performance at Carnival City, Johannesburg on 11 May. The show will also include songs from Zabalaza, Thandiswa’s iconic debut solo album, which turns 20 today. Tickets are available at Computicket.

Regarding Tiny Desk, Thandiswa says “TinyDesk was one of those dreams come true for me and my fans. It was intimate and the team at NPR were extremely generous. Thank you to globalFEST for hooking us up. The show was shot on a snowy day in DC this January. They usually ask that performances are kept to about 15-18mins. So we did about 5 songs, some of them shortened.”

Tiny Desk Concerts, which began in 2008, is a video series of live concerts hosted by NPR Music in the US. It has established itself as one of music’s premiere platforms and has had artists across genres such as Usher, Taylor Swift, Babyface, Burna Boy among many others. Tiny Desk x globalFEST series was born in order to bring globalFEST’s international music discovery into people’s homes. The concert can be viewed on NPR’s youtube page.
